When Dr. Henry Wiese is deployed to Afghanistan, his wife Helen refuses to join him, leading to marital tensions. Their young son Samuel, deeply attached to his hamster Raffi, receives the pet from his father. After an expensive veterinary surgery, Raffi is accidentally taken by Rocky, a recently released car thief. Samuel's sister Molly and her boyfriend Jochen become entangled in a web of lies and must help find the hamster, who embarks on unexpected adventures, including a stint in a television studio's hamster show.
