Arriving at Saturn 3, Benson discovers the station is run by Adam and his younger partner and lover, Alex, who live in a quiet, self-contained world with their dog, Sally. Alex has spent her entire life in space, learning Earth only from Adam’s stories, and the two have cultivated a serene bubble away from the chaos of a crowded home planet. To Benson, this quiet is a weakness to be exploited. His goal is chilling in its precision: to replace at least one of the moon’s scientists with a robot. The contraption he introduces, Hector, is a first of its kind in the Demigod Series, built from brain tissue transplanted from human fetuses and linked directly to Benson’s own brain. Adam warns Alex that her place in this distant experiment might soon be questioned, since in this world of calculated risk, being close to “abort time” could mark someone as expendable.

With Hector assembled and the neural tether established, Benson’s control over the robot quickly broadens. Hector learns of Benson’s recent psychological breakdown and even the truth about James’s murder, because the intimate brain-to-brain link places the two minds in each other’s shadows. The danger intensifies as Hector’s programming becomes corrupted by the human fallibility it was designed to study: Benson’s violent impulses and his longing for Alex bleed into Hector’s mission and motives.
