USCG pilot Lt Cmdr. Pagnolini [Michael Conrad] and his winchman Haig [Doug McClure] answer an SOS call at sea and reach a derelict schooner, the Requite, where they discover three dead bodies and a lone survivor, Eva [Kim Novak]. The tense moment when they lower a rescue basket to pull them up is followed by a sudden disaster: the line breaks, dropping both Haig and Eva into the cold water. They manage to swim back to the escort vessel, and the pilot informs Haig that they must return to base because their fuel is running dangerously low.

Back aboard the rescue boat, Eva and Haig spend the night anchored to the vessel. She unfolds the strange tale of the storm that killed everyone else aboard and the eerie sequence of events that began after they found a priest adrift at sea, a survivor of the disaster. Eva recounts a series of freakish deaths: one man hurled through a hatch, another hanging from the ship’s mast, a third who seemingly vanished before her eyes, and a fourth man found floating in an aft compartment. Eva attributes these occurrences to supernatural forces, but Haig offers a practical explanation for each anomaly, including the man hovering in the air who is actually impaled on a fish’s snout. The tension between belief and reason colors their night together, and Eva’s vulnerability gives way to a charged, intimate moment.

At dawn, the Coast Guard cutter Venturous arrives. Haig and Eva are transferred from the Requite to the deck of the Venturous, and they board the helicopter for the flight back to Miami, while Venturous personnel begin a careful investigation of the wrecked schooner.

The story takes a startling turn when the Venturous’ captain informs Haig that what they found on the ship doesn’t align with Haig’s report—the figure hanging from the mast was, in fact, a woman. Eva grins with a dangerous happiness and, in a chilling twist, transforms into the priest, Alejandro Rey, and takes control of the situation. He pushes Haig out of the helicopter to his death, and then turns to Pagnolini [Michael Conrad], urging him to beg for salvation; the pilot refuses the Devil. The priest kills him without touching him, and the helicopter crashes into the sea. The priest survives and floats away as Haig—somehow brought back to life—waves toward a distant approaching rescue ship, his face now twisted with a wicked, victorious smile.
