Set in 1920 during the final days of the First Armenian Republic, the Armenian army battles Turkish forces in the west and a Red Army incursion with a Bolshevik mutiny in the northeast. Hayk Saroyan returns from Russia to assume a minor post at the Dashnak command centre, where his brother Gevorg, a steadfast patriot captain, prefers death to exile. As war rages, Hayk suspects Gevorg may be a Bolshevik spy, testing family bonds.
