A witch's curse forces each Baronet of Ruddigore to commit a crime each day or endure torture. The current heir, Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd, avoids this fate by masquerading as the simple farmer Robin Oakapple. Only his loyal servant Old Adam Goodheart and adopted brother, the seaman Richard Dauntless, know his secret. Oakapple falls in love with the beautiful Rose Maybud and wishes to wed her, but his true identity is soon exposed, endangering both his love and his escape.
