In the border town of Malava, a boisterous Polish community lives off horse‑stealing, trading and smuggling. Their way of life is shattered when Captain Stoloff’s Russian garrison arrives and, in the name of the Czar, requisitions every horse for the Russian‑Japanese War. With no horses to steal, Kifke cannot afford to marry Estusha and the village’s young men face conscription, prompting Zavill to intervene.
