Adapted from a story by Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, the film prefigures the poetic cinema of the 1960s with its focus on doomed lovers and a reverent celebration of nature. Set in the 1830s, it follows a young woman forced into an unwanted marriage and her serf boyfriend, who is pursued by the authorities, as they flee together in a desperate bid for freedom.
