What Happens at the End of Reminiscence?
How Reminiscence (2017) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
At the conclusion of Reminiscence, protagonist Nick Bannister makes a devastating choice that recontextualizes the entire film. After solving the mystery of Mae's disappearance and trapping the corrupt Cyrus Boothe in a loop of his own worst memory, Nick decides he cannot face a future without the woman he loved. He returns to the tank, the device used to navigate memories, and uploads a file titled "The Story," choosing to spend the rest of his natural life reliving his time with Mae on a continuous loop. His partner, Watts, finds him in this permanent vegetative state but rather than unplugging him, she lovingly cares for his aging body, understanding that for Nick, a reality without Mae is not worth living.
The tragedy of this decision is underscored by the truth Nick uncovers about Mae's actions. It is revealed that Mae was originally a con artist hired by a wealthy heir, Sebastian Sylvan, to steal a specific memory from Nick's archives that threatened Sylvan's inheritance. While Mae initiated their relationship as part of this con, she genuinely fell in love with Nick and eventually sacrificed herself to protect an innocent child from being killed by Boothe. Her suicide was a final act of defiance and protection, leaving a hidden message for Nick that allowed him to save the child and bring the villains to justice. This revelation proves her love was real, making Nick's withdrawal from reality feel like a romantic, if destructive, tribute.
The film uses this ending to draw a sharp parallel to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, which Nick recounts earlier in the movie. Just as Orpheus could not resist looking back and lost his wife forever, Nick refuses to move forward, choosing instead to dwell in the "underworld" of his memories. The ending creates a narrative loop, suggesting that the movie itself might have been Nick's reminiscence all along. However, the final scenes confirm the physical reality of his situation. The film ultimately argues that while obsession with the past can blind a person to the love and opportunities right in front of them—specifically Watts' unrequited affection—it remains a seductive refuge for those too broken to endure the pain of the present.
