In the fictional town of Pair-a-Dice, California, during the Gold Rush of 1850, a young woman named Angel works as a prostitute. Despite her beauty and popularity, she grapples with resentment and self-hatred, becoming the focus of many local men who are willing to wait days for her attention.

When Angel arrives in California, she has hopes of a fresh start but ends up forced back into prostitution after being robbed. The grim realization of her situation leads her to meet Michael, who continues to pursue her.
