Station-master Fabian Bom runs his railway with obsessive precision, insisting every train departs exactly on the second. Obsessed with duty and punctuality, he tries to win back his love, Plum‑Plum, the major’s daughter, who flirts with army officers. He enlists in the infantry, discovers a passion for training, marches and hard labor, and wins the affection of the compassionate Agnes.
