Set in 1947 Malaya during the communist insurgency, the British Army’s South‑East Asia Song and Dance Unit is dispatched into the jungle to boost morale. Led by the zealously moralistic Major Giles Flack (John Cleese), the troupe also includes the ageing, theatrical Terri Dennis (Denis Quilley), whose flamboyant impressions aim to amuse the troops, though the soldiers often find their own ways to entertain themselves.
