In the Azoth Kingdom, powerful figures convene as Mega Evolution Councillor Alva and Prince Raleigh plot to bring Magearna to the capital after its discovery in the Nebel Plateau—a desolate region where many Pokémon have suffered at human hands. Magearna, Yuka Terasaki, is the center of this political maneuver, and the Mythical Pokémon Volcanion, Matsumoto Kōshirō X, tries to intervene, only to be dragged down by a binding electromagnetic band and crash into a forest near Ash Ketchum and his friends camping nearby. The group is joined by Pikachu, Ikue Otani, and Ash Ketchum’s companions—Serena, Mayu Matsuoka, Clemont, and Bonnie—who awaken to find Volcanion tethered to Ash with a second band, turning an accidental encounter into a reluctant alliance.
Together they begin a trek to recover Magearna and learn more about the strange bonds that tie Ash to Volcanion. The journey draws them toward Nebel Plateau, where a deeper history of abuse and fear for Pokémon lurks beneath the surface. Along the way, Team Rocket surfaces with a scheme to recapture Magearna, hired by Alva, and the group only narrowly fends them off with crucial help from Raleigh’s sister, Princess Kimia, Mayu Matsuoka. On the plateau, the local Pokémon prove instrumental as they work to free Magearna and calm the mounting tensions between humans and Pokémon.
As the tensions heat up, Clemont and Kimia coordinate with the Plateau’s resident Pokémon to remove the electromagnetic bands that bind the travelers. At last the humans gain a measure of freedom, but Volcanion insists that Ash and the others depart, even as they refuse to leave Magearna behind. The following day, Alva and his underlings, Levi and Cherie, mount a full-scale assault to recapture Magearna. Alva shatters Magearna’s “Soul-Heart” in a bid to awaken a mechanism in Azoth Castle that would turn the fortress into a flying weapon. Raleigh is knocked unconscious in the ensuing clash as the castle rises into the sky.
In a desperate bid, Ash, Pikachu, Volcanion, Kimia, and Greninja infiltrate the fortress. They are soon trapped by Alva, who aims to break Magearna’s spirit with a devastating assault on Nebel Plateau. Yet the plateau’s resident Pokémon rally to protect their home, aided by Squishy the Zygarde Core, and Ash manages to disable Alva’s control by destroying his cane, which had kept the Pokémon under his command. With the fortress rocking, Alakazam amplifies psychic powers to levitate everyone away from danger, and Volcanion frees himself and his friends from the perilous structure.
Volcanion then sacrifices his own safety to destroy the fortress, placing himself at its center as a last stand to save Nebel Plateau. The blast leaves Magearna without her spirit at first, and the group mourns what seems like a tragic end. Yet in a dramatic turn, Magearna’s life is rekindled when Volcanion reappears alive, collapsed but saved from harm. Magearna revives Volcanion with a gentle plea and a floral cough that had earlier tickled Volcanion’s nose, a quirky reminder of the bond between them. With Volcanion recovered, he grants Pikachu and the other Pokémon honorary membership at Nebel Plateau, while the humans reflect on the cost of power and the resilience of friendship.
Back in the Azoth Kingdom, Ash and his companions return with Kimia and Raleigh. Bonnie’s playful proposal to Kimia’s personal assistant, Flamel, on Clemont’s behalf—Sanae Kobayashi—adds a lighter note to the aftermath, even as a hint of romance eases into the narrative. Kimia and her shiny Gardevoir discover Alva tangled in the wreckage of his jetpack in a tree, and Gardevoir levitates him onto Kimia’s aircraft, where the magnetic bands finally imprison him. Levi and Cherie are likewise taken into custody, and Raleigh departs on his own Pokémon journey with his Slurpuff, a passing of the torch as a new chapter begins for the young prince.
Magearna remains peacefully at Nebel Plateau, watched over by Volcanion from his hidden cave, while the Nebel Plateau Pokémon continue to safeguard their home. The adventures leave Ash and his friends with a renewed sense of balance between humans and Pokémon, tempered by the memory of loss and the hope of lasting harmony. Team Rocket, observed from a distance, seems satisfied with how things turned out, recognizing that true partnership between people and the creatures they share the world with has finally started to take root.
