The whole story of Mavka: The Forest Song (2023) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The narrative unfolds with a flashback to a mystical tree known as the Source of Life, nestled within the vast and ancient Enchanted Forest. This revered tree sustains the entire forest and its residents with its powerful essence. One fateful day, a human, the proprietor of a sawmill, trespasses through the Dark Mountain and ventures into the Enchanted Forest, desperately pleading with Nazar Zadniprovskyi, the forest’s guardian, Lesh, for a drop of water from the Source of Life to save his ailing newborn daughter. Out of compassion, Lesh grants the request, but to his horror, the sawmill owner returns with an army of humans, intending to seize all the power for himself. This ignites a fierce confrontation, which, although won by Lesh, comes at a devastating cost to him and his kind. Henceforth, he enacts a law prohibiting any humans from entering the forest and barricades the passage through the Dark Mountain for all eternity.

Fast forward to present day, where we meet Mavka, a virtuous nymph, as she awakens from her winter slumber, bringing life back to the forest alongside her lively companion, Mykhailo Khoma as Hush, and her kitty-frog friend, Swampy. The forest inhabitants revel in the arrival of spring.

In a human village neighboring the Enchanted Forest, Kylina, the now grown daughter of the sawmill owner, reemerges. She presents herself to the villagers and proposes a lucrative job – one that entails traversing the Dark Mountain, but the villagers decline due to their fear of malevolent spirits lurking in the woods. Yet, a resourceful young musician named Artem Pyvovarov decides to accept the challenge in order to procure medicine for his sick uncle Oleh Mykhailiuta. Kylina tasks him with finding a unique leaf from the Enchanted Forest.

Amidst this backdrop, Lesh declares that a new guardian will be selected by the Supreme Spirits of Nature at the Heart of the Forest, as his own strength has waned over the years. However, Julia Sanina as Ondina casts shadows on Mavka’s integrity, deeming her unworthy of such a responsibility.

Mavka encounters Lukas and, despite her initial intent to frighten him away, is instantly captivated by his musical talent when he plays his sopilka. After learning of his noble mission, Mavka comes to trust him and offers a cure—accompanied by Hush’s reluctant assistance—on the condition he will depart after retrieving what he seeks. Upon their adventure together through the woods, feelings blossom between Mavka and Lukas.

Later that night, Lesh gathers the forest inhabitants to the tree, with Lukas disguised among them. The Spirits choose Mavka as the new guardian, though Ondina vehemently opposes this decision. Lukas stands up for Mavka, but when Ondina exposes his disguise, he is chased away. Mavka, wanting to help him, gives him a drop from the Source of Life to heal Uncle Leo, though he cannot fulfill his promise to play for her. Ondina, furious with Mavka for her decision, warns that Lukas will betray her.

When Lukas returns, Kylina expresses her mistrust, suspecting he might be deceiving her. She instructs her stylist, Serhii Prytula, Frol, to monitor him closely. Meanwhile, the cure Mavka gifted to Uncle Leo revitalizes him significantly. Suspecting Lukas’s success, Kylina prepares a plan for his venture back to the forest.

The next day, feeling a connection to Lukas, Mavka disguises herself and ventures to the village with Swampy to return Lukas’s lost sopilka. She seizes this opportunity to mend relations with the humans. At the village's spring festival, Lukas gifts her a vyshyvanka dress and a pendant etched with symbols of nature. Amidst the festivity and folk dancing, Lukas attempts to play for Mavka, but in doing so, he inadvertently reveals her true nature, shocking the villagers. Kylina seizes this moment to imprison Lukas in her mansion's basement, turning the villagers against Mavka, but Lesh intervenes to save her.

Lesh recounts the haunting tale of the bitter history between humans and the forest, revealing how he once wielded the Spark of Rage to vanquish the sawmill owner’s forces, at the expense of his own strength. Soon, Kylina pressures Lukas to mark the Source of Life’s location on her map, but he resists. Upon discovering Kylina has captured Mavka, he reluctantly acquiesces, only to realize that the Mavka before him is merely Frol in disguise. Kylina captures Lukas, putting his life in jeopardy, and riles the villagers to attack the forest.

Desperately, Mavka attempts to reason with Kylina, sharing the narrative of her father; however, Kylina reveals her true identity as the sawmill owner’s wife, orchestrating the previous battle driven by her yearning for unending beauty and immortality. In a twisted betrayal, she leads Mavka to mistrust Lukas, believing he sold the location for gold. This deception fuels Mavka’s anger, leading to a pitched battle between humans and forest beings. Embracing her grief, Mavka recklessly beseeches for the Spark of Rage from the One Who Sits in the Rock, ready to pay the ultimate price with her life. Sadly, the spark overwhelms her, rendering her devoid of empathy; she drives both humans and fellow forest dwellers into chaos, summoning a deadly firestorm against the village.

Meanwhile, Hush, Swampy, and Lukas' dog, Dot, liberate Lukas from drowning and rush to halt Mavka’s destruction. Acknowledging that Mavka is unreachable, Lukas plays his sopilka, igniting a chorus from both villagers and forest dwellers that penetrates Mavka’s despair, ultimately bringing her back from the brink. Mavka, healed from the trance, lies on the cusp of death as Lukas pleads for her return. In the void, Mavka discovers Lukas’ loyalty and learns that he never harbored ill intentions. The One Who Sits in the Rock acknowledges Mavka's role as a bridge between the two worlds but insists that, as a consequence of her bargain, she must remain in the Void for eternity. However, Mavka rejects such a fate, asserting that her heart holds an everlasting essence. Moved by her resolve, the Supreme Spirits revive her.

Mavka and Lukas share a heartfelt kiss, reaffirming their bond, as both humans and forest dwellers agree to forge a path towards peace. In the post-credits, an elderly Kylina discovers the Source of Life tree, thrilled at the prospect of rejuvenation; however, her joy is short-lived as she transforms into a baby moments after diving into the magical waters.

Mavka: The Forest Song Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Mavka: The Forest Song (2023): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Who is Kylina really and why did she lie about being the sawmill owner's daughter?

Kylina is actually the wife of the original sawmill owner who betrayed the forest, not his daughter. She lied about her identity to hide her involvement in planning the first attack on the Enchanted Forest. She reveals the truth to Mavka to manipulate her into mistrusting Lukas, driven by her obsession with obtaining the Source of Life for eternal beauty and immortality.

Foreshadowing: Early in the film, Kylina is never shown interacting with the sawmill owner's family, and her unusually intense interest in the Source of Life hints at a hidden agenda.

Q2

Why did Lesh forbid humans from ever entering the forest?

Lesh banished humans because the sawmill owner had initially begged for a drop of the Source of Life to save his sick child, then returned with an army to seize the tree's power for himself. Although Lesh won that battle, the war devastated his kind and cost him much of his strength, so he sealed the Dark Mountain passage and outlawed human entry to protect the forest from ever being exploited again.

Q3

What is the Spark of Rage and what happens when Mavka takes it?

The Spark of Rage is a forbidden power offered by the One Who Sits in the Rock in exchange for the petitioner's life. After Kylina tricks Mavka into believing Lukas betrayed her, the grieving Mavka accepts the bargain to unleash it. The power overwhelms her empathy, wiping away her compassion and turning her into a destructive force that attacks both humans and forest creatures alike, igniting a deadly firestorm toward the village.

Q4

How does Lukas break Mavka out of her rage trance?

After Hush, Swampy, and Lukas's dog Dot rescue Lukas from drowning, Lukas plays his sopilka to reach Mavka. His music resonates with both the villagers and the forest dwellers, and together they create a chorus that breaks through the Spark of Rage and restores Mavka's empathy. This works because the sopilka was the very instrument that first connected her to Lukas and represented their genuine bond.

Foreshadowing: Mavka first fell for Lukas when she heard him play the sopilka, establishing music as a direct link to her emotions.

Q5

Why was Mavka chosen as the new Guardian of the Heart of the Forest?

Lesh announced that a new guardian was needed because his own strength had faded over the years, and the Supreme Spirits of Nature would make the choice. The Spirits selected Mavka because of her pure, compassionate nature and her deep connection to the forest's life. Ondina opposed the decision because she believed Mavka's growing feelings for Lukas made her unreliable, but the Spirits' choice stood.

Q6

Why does Mavka give Lukas a drop of the Source of Life even though he breaks his promise?

Mavka gives Lukas the healing drop because she had come to trust his noble mission to save his sick Uncle Leo, and she did not want him to suffer for a promise he could not keep. After Ondina publicly exposes Lukas and drives him from the gathering, Mavka still helps him because her compassion outweighs the rules she is supposed to enforce as a guardian. This act of kindness is what later fuels Ondina's warning that he will betray her.

Q7

What is Kylina's real motivation for hunting the Source of Life?

Kylina's lifelong obsession with staying young and beautiful has driven her to pursue the Source of Life for its power of immortality. She has spent years disguising herself, manipulating villagers like Lukas, and reigniting war with the forest because she believes the magical waters are the only thing that can grant her endless youth. This same vanity was what pushed her to mastermind the original attack on the forest.

Foreshadowing: Kylina shows unnaturally perfect, ageless features throughout the film, which retroactively explains her obsession with preservation.

Q8

How does Mavka come back to life after the Void claims her?

According to the One Who Sits in the Rock, Mavka's bargain with the Spark of Rage demands she remain in the Void forever. However, Mavka refuses to accept that fate and proclaims that her heart holds an everlasting essence strong enough to reject it. Moved by her resolve, the Supreme Spirits restore her life, choosing love and duty over the price of the forbidden power.

Q9

Why does Lesh save Mavka from the villagers even though she has fallen for a human?

Lesh intervenes because, despite his strict ban on humans and his distrust of Mavka's feelings for Lukas, he still sees her as the chosen Guardian of the forest. He recognizes that her death at the hands of the villagers would be a greater loss than the discomfort of breaking his own rule. He also uses the moment to recount the bitter history between humans and the forest so Mavka can understand why her choices matter.

Foreshadowing: Lesh's compassion years ago, when he gave water to the sawmill owner's child, is echoed in his decision to protect Mavka despite her mistakes.

Q10

What happens to Kylina in the post-credits scene?

In the post-credits scene, an elderly Kylina finally discovers the Source of Life and dives into its waters expecting to be restored to her youthful beauty. Instead, the magic backfires on her selfish intentions and she is regressed into a baby. The darkly humorous ending reflects the forest's sense of justice, punishing her greed for eternal youth with the opposite of what she wanted.

Q11

Why does Mavka believe Lukas betrayed her and attack the village?

Kylina tricks Mavka by claiming that Lukas sold the location of the Source of Life to her in exchange for gold. Unable to verify this in the chaos and already emotionally raw from Lukas's earlier capture, Mavka gives in to her grief and rage and concludes he was deceiving her all along. This manipulation is what drives her to accept the Spark of Rage and unleash destruction on both humans and forest dwellers.

Foreshadowing: Ondina had earlier warned Mavka that Lukas would betray her, planting the seed of doubt that Kylina later exploits.

Q12

Why does Ondina oppose Mavka's appointment as guardian so strongly?

Ondina believes Mavka is emotionally compromised by her love for Lukas, a human, and therefore unfit to be the protector of the forest. Ondina sees Mavka's compassion and willingness to help outsiders as a weakness that mirrors Lesh's old mistake of trusting the sawmill owner. Her hostility stems from a desire to protect the forest from repeating past tragedies, even if it means undermining Mavka publicly.

  • ondina
  • mavka
  • guardian rivalry
  • forest protection
Q13

Why are Mavka and Lukas called the bridge between the human and forest worlds?

The One Who Sits in the Rock acknowledges Mavka's unique role because her love for Lukas and her empathy for both humans and forest creatures make her the only being capable of uniting the two worlds. By risking her life to save them and by rejecting the Void for the sake of love and harmony, she proves that the divide between humans and the Enchanted Forest is not absolute. Peace between the villagers and the forest dwellers becomes possible only through her.

Foreshadowing: Mavka was the only one who repeatedly crossed the border between the village and the forest, learning both cultures intimately.

Q14

Why does Mavka's firestorm threaten forest dwellers along with the villagers?

The Spark of Rage consumed Mavka's empathy entirely, so she can no longer distinguish friend from foe or human from forest spirit. Under its influence she channels pure, indiscriminate destruction at everything around her, which is why she drives away both the villagers who wronged her and her own forest companions. Only music tied to genuine emotion, not her rage, could reach what remained of her compassionate self.

Foreshadowing: Ondina warned that Mavka's emotions made her vulnerable, and the film foreshadows the danger of a guardian losing control.
