What Happens in Pigs: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Pigs (2007) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Miles Jefferson Brown is a smooth-talking soon-to-be college graduate who keeps journals to record his conquests. He moves through relationships with a casual ease, a habit that amuses some and unsettles others. His friend Cleaver Darryn Lucio throws down a playful, high-stakes bet: can Miles sleep with enough different girls before graduation to spell out the alphabet by the surname initials?

Having already checked off several letters, Miles seems to be on track, but the final hurdle is a surname that starts with the letter X—a challenge that tests his charm and persistence. The competition tightens as the stakes rise, and Cleaver pushes Miles to push harder as the pot climbs toward 30,000 dollars.

Miles’ roommate, Ben Christopher Elliott, complicates the scheme in a very personal way: he harbors a crush on Gabrielle ’X’ Melanie Marden, Miles’ target. The dynamic between the three becomes a central tension point as the bet progresses.

As the game continues, Miles finds that Gabrielle is unlike anyone he has met before. The connection grows, and they begin dating, shifting Miles’ perspective from a count of conquests to something real and meaningful. Yet Ben’s jealousy deepens, and his plan to sabotage Miles intensifies when he decides to reveal the bet to Gabrielle.

Despite Miles’ insistence that Gabrielle means more to him than money, Ben’s revelation creates a fracture that Gabrielle must face. The story tracks how a dare intended to test loyalty and luck winds up testing trust, affection, and the possibility of a genuine relationship.

Pigs Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Pigs (2007): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Miles agree to Cleaver's alphabet bet?

Miles agrees to the bet because he's a smooth-talking playboy who already treats his dating life as a competition. The high stakes, 30,000 dollars, combined with Cleaver's challenge frames his conquests as a race rather than genuine relationships. His confidence in his charm makes him believe he can easily complete the challenge.

Foreshadowing: The bet is introduced shortly after we see Miles recording his conquests in his journal, treating women as data points.

  • money
  • challenge
  • dollars
Q2

Why is finding an X surname so difficult for Miles?

The X surname is difficult because it's extremely rare, few people have surnames beginning with X. Miles has already collected most alphabet letters through his various conquests, but the X becomes his final hurdle. This forces him to search specifically for someone with an uncommon surname, making his task much harder than the previous letters.

  • x surname
  • alphabet
  • rare name
  • final letter
Q3

Why does Ben try to sabotage Miles with Gabrielle?

Ben sabotages Miles because he harbors a secret crush on Gabrielle himself. When Miles actually starts developing genuine feelings for her and they begin dating, Ben's jealousy intensifies. His plan to reveal the bet to Gabrielle stems from wanting to ruin Miles' chance at the relationship, not from any loyalty to the truth.

Foreshadowing: Ben reveals his crush on Gabrielle early in the bet setup, creating personal rivalry alongside the dating competition.

Q4

How do Miles' feelings for Gabrielle differ from his other conquests?

Miles' feelings for Gabrielle are genuine rather than transactional. Unlike his previous conquests where he recorded details in his journal like data, Gabrielle makes him shift from counting conquests to wanting a real relationship. He explicitly tells her that she means more to him than the prize money, showing his transformation from player to someone capable of love.

Foreshadowing: The summary notes that Gabrielle is unlike anyone Miles has met before, foreshadowing his emotional shift.

  • feelings
  • love
  • genuine connection
  • relationship
Q5

Why does Ben reveal the bet to Gabrielle?

Ben reveals the bet to Gabrielle out of jealousy and spite, not to protect her. He wants to sabotage Miles' chances with her by exposing that their relationship started under a betting premise. His revelation creates a rift between Miles and Gabrielle, testing whether their connection can survive the truth.

Foreshadowing: Ben's jealousy spirals into schemes to undermine Miles, building to his decision to expose the bet.

Q6

What makes Gabrielle different from Miles' previous conquests?

Gabrielle is different because she's authentic in a way Miles hasn't encountered before. Rather than being just another letter in his alphabet tally, she draws out a genuine connection that makes him question thebet entirely. Her presence shifts his priorities from completing the conquest to building something meaningful.

Q7

Does Miles choose love over the bet money?

Yes, Miles ultimately chooses love over the bet money. Despite Cleaver pushing him to finish the bet as the stakes climb to 30,000 dollars, Miles insists that Gabrielle means more to him than the prize. The film's resolution shows him selecting a genuine relationship over the competitive game, maintaining the optimistic college comedy ending.

Q8

How does the bet affect Miles and Gabrielle's relationship?

The bet creates a critical test for their relationship once Gabrielle learns the truth. She must decide whether Miles' feelings are genuine or just part of his strategy to win the game. The conflict forces both of them to confront whether trust can survive under such circumstances, leading to an uncertain but hopeful outcome.

  • trust
  • relationship test

Q9

Why is Ben jealous of Miles if they're friends?

Ben's jealousy stems from his crush on Gabrielle being overshadowed by Miles' success with her. Even though they're roommates and friends, Ben's feelings for Gabrielle make him view the situation as personal rather than just a game. His jealousy becomes so intense that he's willing to destroy his friend's relationship to get what he wants.

Q10

What are the rules of the alphabet bet?

The alphabet bet requires Miles to sleep with enough women so that the first letter of each woman's surname follows the alphabet from A to Z. The payout rises with the rarity of each girl's surname initial, the harder the letter, the higher the reward. The final challenge is finding someone with an X surname, which proves most difficult.
