First Soviet depiction of Peter the Great, it sets the stage for the post‑Revolutionary line on the early Romanovs. Rulers such as Ivan the Terrible and Peter are portrayed as admirable for their dedication to Russia and their drive to raise its world standing. Yet praising the later, despised Romanovs clashes with the very principles that sparked the 1917 Revolution.
