The sequel continues Eisenstein’s ambitious biopic of Czar Ivan IV, commissioned by Stalin. After the first film, production stalled when Soviet officials objected to Eisenstein’s avant‑garde techniques, which are especially evident here. Banned until after Eisenstein’s and Stalin’s deaths, the film shows Ivan trying to consolidate his power by creating a personal army while the boyar nobility plot to assassinate him.
