Patrik, Age 1.5

The film follows a gay Swedish couple, Sven Torkel Petersson and Göran Skoogh Gustaf Skarsgård, as they move into a quiet suburban neighborhood, settle into their new lives, and begin to explore forming a family together. The story opens with their warm welcome at a neighborhood party and the sense that life is finally steering toward stability, especially as they settle into their jobs and start to plan adoption.

Yet the path to parenthood proves more complicated than they anticipated. No country is willing to allow a gay couple to adopt, casting a shadow over their hopes. After an initial rejection from the Swedish adoption agency, a child becomes available, and they eagerly agree to welcome a son into their home. A troubling twist arrives when a typographical error on the papers changes the child’s age from “1.5” to “15,” a mistake that creates immediate uncertainty about the future.

Patrik Tom Ljungman arrives, and the reality of his troubled past shocks the family. He carries a wary, defensive edge, shaped by fear and a simmering hostility toward the two men who want to love him. The couple rushes back to the agency to fix the error, only to learn that there is little they can do until the following week. In the days that follow, Sven is appalled by Patrik’s insulting behavior, while Göran tries to see something redeeming in him. Patrik’s initial fear and prejudice—believing stereotypes about gay men—creates tension and strain at every turn.

When the agency reopens, officials explain that Patrik’s choices are limited: stay with the couple or return to the foster system. The situation grows tenser as Patrik’s behavior tests the boundaries of their patience. After a turning moment of disillusionment, Sven leaves in disgust because Göran refuses to eject Patrik. Yet Göran agrees to continue caring for Patrik, desperate to keep the lines of support open until a better arrangement can be found. Over the coming weeks, Patrik reveals a surprising talent for gardening, and Göran’s perception begins to shift as he sees glimpses of warmth and potential in the boy.

As time passes, the adoption process moves forward. The agency informs them that a prospective family has been found for Patrik, and the trio confronts the possibility of separation. By then, Patrik has begun to shed much of his initial hostility, and Sven returns, recognizing that their bond is stronger than the fears that once threatened it. Patrik’s new father arrives to take him away, and he leaves with him, but after a short time, Patrik returns. The three of them decide to stay together, embracing a more unconventional but lasting sense of family. In the end, the relationship between Sven and Göran is reaffirmed, and Patrik becomes a permanent part of their lives, forming a unit that endures beyond the initial adoption hurdle.
