Kannaki pleads for Kovalan to return, but he remains resolute, choosing to press on toward Madurapura (present-day Madurai) in the Pandya capital with the hope of a fresh start. Madhavi eventually bears a daughter, Manimekala, who grows up watching the world her parents have shaped—only to choose a path that diverges sharply from her mother’s era and expectations. Manimekala rejects a traditional marriage proposal from the Chola prince and embraces Buddhism after a transformative encounter with a monk, a decision that further unsettles the royal court and strengthens the narrative’s focus on desire, faith, and rebellion. The prince’s pursuit ends in tragedy, and Manimekala faces banishment for her acts.

Meanwhile, Kovalan learns of Madhavi’s life and Manimekala’s birth, but remorse weighs heavily on him, and he resolves not to seek out Madhavi or his daughter again. The couple’s resolve to live honestly without selling the anklets falters as necessity and pride pull them toward a fateful decision: Kovalan will sell one anklet while Kannaki keeps the other. He travels to Madurapura, where fate collides with courtly power in a cruel test of trust and truth.

In Madurapura, a royal theft panic erupts when the queen discovers her own anklet has disappeared. The king proclaims a prize for the thief who returns it, and the royal goldsmith seizes the chance to manipulate events. He deceitfully claims Kovalan is the thief, swiftly ordering his arrest and, alarmingly, his execution under a veil of legal procedure that seems swift, blind, and unjust. Kannaki arrives in the capital too late to intervene, only to learn of Kovalan’s death and the tragic miscarriage of justice.

What follows is a moment of searing revelation. Kannaki, in a dramatic turn of fate, reveals the truth about the anklets—the queen’s pearl-embedded anklet versus Kannaki’s ruby one—by presenting the evidence in a way that shatters the king’s assumptions and exposes the tragedy at the heart of the city. The shock of truth consumes the royal court: the queen faints, and Kannaki’s righteous anger erupts into a scorching curse. She condemns Madurapura to fire, and a supernatural spark seems to purge the city of its pride and corruption.

In the wake of this cataclysm, Kannaki’s chastity and purity are revered as sacred, and she ascends toward heaven while Madurai is left to confront the consequences of its people’s actions. The legend of Kannaki—also revered as Pattini or Kannagi Amman—spreads beyond the borders of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, where worshippers remember her as a goddess who embodies justice, chastity, and fierce protection of the afflicted.
