Kitty clashes with Andre over the imminent danger facing Paris, underscoring her obliviousness to the stakes. The heated quarrel drives the two women to escape with Emmy, setting the story in motion.

The women flee to the country inn run by Pappa Renard to seek shelter from the danger. Renard reveals that a shot down English flyer, William Gray, is hiding there, and Kitty and Emmy decide to move him back toward Paris.

Renard's disclosure convinces them to smuggle Gray back to Paris despite the risks. They plan to slip him past checkpoints as they continue their journey.

The car develops a flat, and German Captain Kurt von Weber happens by. One of his men changes the tire and Von Weber drives them back toward Paris, revealing the reach of the occupiers.

Before parting, Von Weber hands Kitty his card and discloses that he works for the Gestapo military department. The encounter underscores the danger and the uneasy truce they must navigate.

The group succeeds in getting Gray past Madame Martin and into Emmy's apartment, evading immediate suspicion. The fragile cover is set for the growing rescue operation.

A week later, Gray reveals he must leave, and German patrols surround the building. Von Weber arrives with a bouquet, providing a timely distraction that ends the raid for the moment.

Kitty suggests going to a nightclub to pull the German mission off the table. At the club, they encounter Andre, and Kitty explains her predicament and asks for his help to secure Gray's escape.

Following Andre's plan, they contact Tissier the baker. A German patrol passes by, and Emmy is taken in for questioning, adding new peril to their operation.

Seeing Gray off, Kitty returns to help Emmy and finds her at Tissier's place. The two decide to expand their efforts to assist others under the umbrella of the smuggling network.

Kitty and Emmy contact Father Dominique, who has hidden about a dozen escapees in his crypt. The women take two of them but learn that Tissier has been shot, complicating their plan.

With the cemetery across the border, they attempt to smuggle men using a lavish funeral procession. The undertaker hopes to stage a noble burial for the elderly Marquise de Montigny to fool the guards, but the risk remains high and the plan tests their resolve.

By 1942, Von Weber devises a plan to crush the smuggling network by using a fake downed Allied pilot. The man is hidden inside a chest in Emmy's antique shop, but he becomes suspicious and is knocked unconscious with a candlestick when distracted.

Too much is overheard over the phone, and the Germans, led by Von Weber with Andre back from England, close in. Emmy captures the moment by knocking out Andre and surrendering to save him, while Kitty and the others hide in the basement.

The group survives to be liberated by the Allies. Emmy, however, is so unsettled by her ordeal that she initially does not recognize Kitty, a sign of the lasting trauma of their experiences.
