Uday, Siddharth, is a wealthy heir who becomes chairman of a company after his father’s death and adopts the belief that life is short, a mindset he uses to seize the moment. At a New Year’s party in 2007, he spots a woman named Sandhya, a traditional soul who writes in a diary at a pub. Sandhya, Shamili, lives a simple life in a beachside house where she runs a nursery and clings to her own firm ideals.
Driven by curiosity and charm, Uday infiltrates her world under the pretense of being a paying guest, determined to win her love. Through a mix of wit and persistence, he gradually earns her trust and gifts her with twelve presents on her birthday, the last gift being Uday himself, a gesture that marks the beginning of a tender but complex romance.
A parallel thread follows an insurance salesman named Abhishek, Sunil Varma, who tries to coach his younger, reclusive colleague (Abhishek’s Assistant, Saptagiri) in the art of manliness, a sequence filled with comical misadventures. Their paths cross Sandhya’s life when they attempt to sell her a life insurance policy. She names Uday as the beneficiary, leading him to momentarily feel victorious. The twist arrives when the policy is revealed to be intertwined with Sandhya’s health: she is diagnosed with breast cancer and has limited time left.
As the truth unfolds, Uday commits to helping Sandhya seize what remains of her days. He takes her on a cruise to Kolkata to scatter her parents’ ashes in the Ganga, where they encounter a colorful cast of characters and even a kidnapped Abhishek who tries to tell Sandhya about the policy’s rejection, only to be thwarted by Uday’s quick actions. These experiences push Sandhya toward embracing life more fully, and upon returning home they host a Christmas party at her beach house, a celebration that belies the shadow of her illness.
The couple’s bond deepens as Sandhya accepts love and confesses a desire to spend her final days with Uday. In the film’s quiet, rainy finale, they sit on a bench beneath a “Welcome 2008” sign on New Year’s Eve, and a year later, Uday sits alone under a “Welcome 2009” sign, waiting in the rain. The ending implies that Sandhya has passed away, but her memory remains a guiding presence for Uday as he walks away, carrying her spirit into the years ahead.
