Out of the Blue

David Gray cycles into town and argues with bank staff over a minor issue. He leaves the bank visibly disturbed and returns to his parents' holiday home, where he keeps a cache of firearms. The combination of instability and anger sets the stage for the violence to come.

Gray confronts the neighbors' children in his yard and verbally abuses them, sparking a confrontation with Garry Holden. He then re-enters the house and returns armed, shooting Holden dead. The murder marks the immediate escalation of the deadly spree.

Chiquita, Jasmine, and Rewa witness the shooting and flee into Holden's house, seeking refuge. They attempt to hide from Gray as he searches the home. The house becomes a focal point of the escape and danger.

Chiquita, wounded, reaches Julie-Anne and they drive toward the scene to rescue the other girls. They realize Holden's house is on fire as they approach. Julie-Anne is forced to drive to safety as Gray fires at them.

Holden's house is set on fire, complicating the rescue attempt. Firelight, smoke, and confusion fill the scene as bystanders hear gunfire. Gray's violence continues as the fire rages.

A six-person utility drives toward the burning house, carrying three children. Knox and Harvey reach the vehicle; Stacey Percy is found alive but wounded, while the other occupants are dead. Paramedics attempt to stabilize her as responders cope with the chaos.

Police seal off the town and surround Gray's house. Gray hides in a crib, spending the night as the town fears the gunman's next move. The siege builds until a decisive confrontation.

The Armed Offenders Squad surrounds the crib and uses tear gas to flush Gray out. He emerges, firing wildly from the hip, and is shot multiple times. The gunman collapses and dies from his wounds as officers restrain him.

A montage shows Eva Dickson escorted by AOS to acknowledge her bravery, and Chiquita and Stacey recovering in hospital. The town's aftermath includes the deliberate torching of Gray's house and a list of the 13 people who died. The final images honor the victims and responders.
