Oru Muthassi Gadha (2016) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Oru Muthassi Gadha (2016), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened, and what it all means.

Siby, Suraj Venjaramoodu, lives in Kochi with his wife Jeena, their daughter Alice, their son Alan, and his ageing mother Leelamma. Leelamma is ill-tempered and meddles in every detail, often putting off or souring the hired help, which creates a constant undercurrent of tension at home. A Bengali worker named Babu comes into their lives and, for a while, brings a welcome calm as Leelamma unexpectedly starts getting along with him. At his boss’s suggestion, he arranges a family trip that promises some relief and a change of scenery.

Yet, the day before departure, Leelamma’s temper flares during a fight with Sibi and she backs out of the trip. Undeterred, Sibi and the rest of the family decide to go ahead and call Susamma, Sibi’s mother-in-law, to join them. Susamma is sociable, modern in outlook, and comfortable with technology and contemporary fun. After a few initial clashes, Leelamma and Susamma begin to bond. The two women, along with Babu, decide to celebrate Leelamma’s birthday and—together—start to check off items on her bucket list.

One night, after a round of drinks, Leelamma begins recounting a love story from her college days involving a classmate named Zakaria, but she passes out before she can finish. The next day, Susamma waits for the missing ending, and Leelamma confesses that she did not get the closure she hoped for and that the memory still haunts her.

Susamma suspects that Leelamma’s unresolved past is driving her unhappiness and decides to seek out Zakaria. They initially plan to bring Babu along, but he disappears the next day. Since Susamma cannot drive long distances, they enlist their granddaughter Alice and her boyfriend Milind to assist. With Leelamma, Alice, and Milind, they journey to Zakaria’s birthplace in Kurathikad. There, they unexpectedly encounter Babu again, along with a neighbor’s daughter, and discover that Babu is not Bengali at all—he had only pretended to be to stay close to his own lover.

With help from Babu, Leelamma’s old classmate Kurup and his grandson Brilly, they locate the now-elder Zakaria. When they finally meet him, Leelamma delivers a sharp slap and leaves, the encounter reopening old wounds.

On the return journey, Leelamma reveals that she shaped the tale’s ending to wake Zakaria up to his past neglect, and she feels a sense of relief at finally finding closure. The duo then conceives a plan to launch a program called Oru Muthassi Gadha, a monthly initiative to help fulfill one wish for an elderly or abandoned inmate who never had the chance to realize it in youth. The story closes with the two setting their sights on the airport, ready to travel to America with Babu and complete the remaining items on Leelamma’s bucket list.

This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.

Q1

Why does Leelamma back out of the family trip at the last minute?

A.

Leelamma backs out of the trip after a heated argument with her son Sibi. Her temper flares during the disagreement, and she decides not to join the family. This decision sets the stage for Susamma being invited to accompany them instead, which ultimately leads to the bonding between the two grandmothers.

Earlier scenes show Leelamma's tendency to withdraw from situations when she feels slighted or unimportant.

Q2

Why is Leelamma so ill-tempered and difficult with everyone?

A.

Leelamma's sharp temper stems from unresolved emotional pain from her past, particularly her unfinished college romance with Zakaria. Throughout the film, it becomes clear that her difficult behavior masks deeper feelings of regret and bitterness. Her journey toward closure with Zakaria directly correlates with her softening demeanor.

The film hints early on that Leelamma's unhappiness goes beyond mere crankiness when she becomes visibly moved by Babu's presence and later by Susamma's companionship.

Q3

Who is Zakaria and what was his relationship with Leelamma?

A.

Zakaria was Leelamma's college classmate and romantic interest during her college days. They had a love story, but he neglected her and their relationship ended without proper closure. Decades later, Leelamma still carries this unresolved hurt, which manifests as her angry disposition and unmet emotional needs.

Leelamma's incomplete recounting of her college love story while drinking sets up the central mystery of her past.

Q4

Why does Leelamma slap Zakaria when they finally meet?

A.

Leelamma slaps Zakaria as a way to confront him about his past neglect. After waiting decades for an explanation or apology, she uses this dramatic gesture to finally express her hurt and anger. The slap represents the release of decades-long suppressed emotions and is part of her journey toward closure.

Leelamma's unfinished story and her confession that the memory still haunts her foreshadow this emotional confrontation.

Q5

What was the ending of Leelamma's college love story that she never finished telling?

A.

Leelamma's love story with Zakaria ended without closure, he neglected her and their relationship faded without explanation. On the return journey, she reveals she shaped the tale's ending to wake Zakaria up to his past neglect. The actual ending she told Susamma was fabricated to serve as a form of confrontation rather than pure memoir.

Leelamma passing out before finishing the story and her confession that she did not get the closure she hoped for establish this unresolved thread.

Q6

Why was Babu pretending to be Bengali when he wasn't?

A.

Babu was actually from the local area but pretended to be Bengali to stay close to his own lover, a neighbor's daughter. His fake identity allowed him to work in Kochi while remaining near his romantic partner. When the family encounters him again in Kurathikad with the neighbor's daughter, this deception is revealed.

Babu's sudden disappearance before the journey to Kurathikad hints at something unusual about his background.
