On her way to school in 2015, 16-year-old Naho Takamiya suddenly receives letters written by herself ten years later. The letters describe upcoming events and urge her to prevent her biggest regret. At first skeptical, she begins reading them as they hint at Kakeru Naruse's arrival and potential tragedy.

A transfer student from Tokyo, Kakeru quickly befriends Naho and her circle of friends. The letters also predict his arrival and the changes he will bring to the group. Naho and friends start to take his presence into account as they navigate new dynamics.

To avert the foretold regret, Naho follows the letters' guidance but also tries to alter events in a positive direction. She encourages Kakeru to join the school soccer team and tries to influence his relationship with Rio Ueda. Her actions are aimed at giving Kakeru reasons to stay hopeful.

As part of the changes, Naho insists that Kakeru and friends share experiences, including watching the school fireworks. The plan strengthens their bonds and reveals Kakeru's vulnerability. The moment marks a turning point as they lean on each other.

While processing the letters, Hiroto Suwa confirms he has also received messages from his future self and agrees to work with Naho to create a parallel universe where Kakeru can live. During a Bon Festival shrine visit, Kakeru tearfully discloses that his mother committed suicide on the day of his school entrance ceremony. He explains the burden of that loss and why he has felt distant from his family and friends. The confession deepens the group's resolve to support him.

Naho, Hiroto, Chino, Hagita, and Azu decide to back Kakeru for his 17th birthday by giving him gifts and helping him prepare. They sign up to support him in the upcoming relay race, aiming to lift his spirits. Kakeru receives the flowers he asked for from Hiroto during this time.

On the day of the relay, Kakeru anchors the team and delivers a powerful performance. His friends' support fuels his renewed determination, and he wins the race. After the triumph, he thanks and shares a kiss with Naho on the cheek as a reward.

Weeks before the New Year, Naho and Kakeru drift apart due to a conflict about Kakeru's grandmother's health. The tension strains their friendship and threatens the progress they have made with the letters' guidance. Despite their care for each other, distance grows.

One day before December 31, Naho finally confesses her love for Kakeru, which shocks him. He reveals that he plans to commit suicide, feeling unable to be with her and their friends in the future. This confession marks the emotional turning point toward urgent action.

Back home, Kakeru finds a pre-recorded video from his mother who explains that she killed herself to avoid burdening him and wishes for his happiness elsewhere. The revelation reframes his sense of guilt and pushes him toward choosing life. The moment intensifies the group's determination to change the course of events.

When Kakeru disappears on New Year's Eve, Naho and her friends panic and comb the streets of Minamoto to find him. Their memories and resolve drive them to scour every corner in a desperate bid to bring him back. The moment culminates in a close call as he is nearly hit by a truck.

Kakeru is saved at the last moment by a memory of his friends and apologizes for the pain caused by his intent to end his life. He confesses that he does not want to die because he cannot be with them. The event marks a tragic potential averted and a renewed commitment to friendship.

The film closes with 2025 Naho, Hiroto, Chino, Hagita, and Azu watching the sunset from a hill, while in the parallel 2015, the same sunset scene occurs with Kakeru joining them. The two timelines suggest that their actions created a life where Kakeru survives and remains with the group. The ending ties together the idea of parallel universes and the enduring power of friendship.
