The picture is structured as three separate stories—“Workmate,” “Déjà vu,” and “Operation Y.” Each follows the well‑meaning but bumbling Soviet student Shurik (sometimes spelled Shourick) as he stumbles into absurd predicaments and, with his characteristic ingenuity, extricates himself. The film proved immensely popular, topping Soviet box‑office charts in 1965.
