Niko wakes up in an entirely unfamiliar, pitch-dark house. An in-game computer greets them by pulling the current username from their own machine and warns that the world they inhabit is fraying at the edges. The mission is stated in simple terms but feels vast in scope: guide Niko back to their homeworld. The moment sets the tone for a journey where perception and reality blur.

A sun manifests not as a celestial orb but as a glowing lightbulb, its light offering a fragile beacon. With that strange sun, Niko finds a way out of the house and begins to sense daylight as something that can be restored. The emblematic sun becomes a central tool and symbol for the journey ahead.

Niko steps into the Barrens, a harsh wasteland where life flickers under a pale, breathless sky. Here they encounter Prophetbot, a firm, prophetic robot who declares that Niko is prophesied to save the world. The player’s role is framed as a godly guiding presence within the game, directing the Messiah toward salvation.

Prophetbot becomes a teacher, explaining that the player steers the Messiah through unfolding chapters. The guiding principle is clear: carry the sun through three large zones and place it atop the central tower’s apex to restore daylight. This sets up a collaborative dynamic between player and character, with trust at the core.

The journey leads to the Glen, a lush yet guarded landscape where Alula and Calamus present a glowing feather. The feather becomes a tool and symbol, enabling Niko to fashion a feather pen that helps outwit a guard robot and gain passage to the next phase. The moment blends wonder with practical invention.

Using the feather pen, the path opens to the Refuge, an urbanized realm beneath the city. A lamplighter guides Niko downward through the layered, dim corridors toward the heart of the surface-level labyrinth. The descent marks a transition from forested calm to a maze-like cityscape.

In a grand, lived-in library, Niko meets George, whose presence is supported by Kip Silverpoint. George acts as translator for a journal from the Barrens, clarifying lore about the tower. The journal hints that access to the tower hinges on three phosphoric items—amber, feather, and a die—each provided by a different source, including George herself.

The trio of items—amber, feather, and die—are revealed as the key to advancing toward the tower’s upper reaches. Each item must be obtained from a different source, tying knowledge, magic, and mechanics into a single sequence. Collecting them marks the next major milestone in the ascent.

Arriving at the tower, the governing entity remains silent as Niko attempts to speak, yet conveys a sense of victory for both players. A note appears as a wallpaper cue that hints at reconnecting with Niko. The Author reveals the sun’s growing power and danger, foreshadowing the choice that lies ahead.

The player faces a stark, consequential choice: break the sun and send Niko home, risking the destruction of the world, or place the sun at the top of the tower and trap Niko within this world. The decision hinges on the player's alignment of salvation, sacrifice, and the game's broader fate.

If the sun is placed atop the tower, daylight returns and the world brightens. The inhabitants witness a renewal, and the credits roll with a sense of awe and relief. The journey concludes with a restored harmony between the cosmos, the city, and Niko.

If the sun is destroyed, Niko’s connection to their mother figure remains hauntingly intact as they hear their mother’s voice outside the window before bidding farewell and stepping offscreen. The ending is intimate and bittersweet, colored by sacrifice and separation.
