Set in 1900, spirited 30‑year‑old Stepha, the daughter of a prosperous family, consents to wed her cousin Paul, an Austrian army officer burdened with massive debts. Paul refuses to work or consummate the marriage, and his health deteriorates steadily, deepening the family’s crisis.
