In 1955 Vienna, during its post-war occupation, the black-market dealer Dr. Falke moves freely through the French, British, American and Russian sectors, trading champagne and caviar among the highest echelons of the allied powers. After a costume party, Col. Eisenstein—the French colonel—plays a lighthearted practical joke on a drunken Falke, depositing him, asleep and dressed as a bat, in the lap of a patriotic Russian statue to be discovered the following morning by irate Russian soldiers. The prank nearly sparks an arrest, but Gen. Orlovsky of the USSR steps in to defuse the situation, saving Falke from trouble and setting the stage for a far more intricate game of wits.
A vengeful Falke then hatches an elaborate plan designed to outwit his friend and rival, weaving together Orlovsky, British Major Frank, Eisenstein’s beautiful wife Rosalinda and her maid Adele into a web of mistaken identities and whispered incentives. The center of the scheme is a masked ball hosted by Orlovsky, a night where appearances blur and everyone has something to gain or lose. Falke’s scheme promises a deliciously tangled payback, built on the allure of deception and the thrill of turning the tables on powerful figures who imagine themselves untouchable.
Behind the veneer of orchestrated charm lies the complication of Captain Alfred Westerman, an American officer and an old flame of Rosalinda who is eager to exploit her husband’s absence. He quietly moves into the same social orbit, taking a hotel room adjacent to Rosalinda’s, nursing a quiet ambition that she could be coaxed to share. When Major Frank arrives to escort Eisenstein into custody, misfortune strikes: he discovers Alfred in Rosalinda’s room, dressed in Eisenstein’s own robe, and mistakenly arrests Alfred instead of Eisenstein. To preserve appearances and avoid scandal, Alfred chooses silence, letting the error stand rather than expose the truth.
As the masked ball unfolds, Adele, donning one of Rosalinda’s gowns, catches the eye of Eisenstein, who finds himself unable to intervene—he is technically expected to be in jail and is at the ball only through Orlovsky’s connivance, a detail that Falke has artfully arranged. Adele’s presence excites Orlovsky and Frank, intensifying the mix of desire, fear and pride that threads through the party. When the mysterious Rosalinda arrives in her own mask, Eisenstein’s pursuit is swift but futile at first, for she slips away with his watch, a keepsake that Falke slyly hints will reappear at his home.
Midnight brings a reckoning. Eisenstein corner the reality of the mistaken identity as he reaches the jail to confront the man he believes to be Alfred, only to find Alfred still wearing Eisenstein’s dressing gown. The truth unfolds quickly: Alfred indeed had been courting Rosalinda at the hotel, and Eisenstein races back to the hotel to confront his wife, closely pursued by Alfred and Major Frank. Rosalinda, with a calm smile and a recovered watch from her sleeve, turns the confrontation into a moment of vulnerability, and Eisenstein’s plea for forgiveness hangs in the air as the guests from Orlovsky’s party drift back toward the hotel to witness the aftermath.
Falke finally steps into the open, confessing that he was the architect of the entire ruse and that the night’s chaos was a carefully calibrated test of loyalties, pride and the fragility of reputation among men who move in high circles. The revelation lands with a flourish as the revelers resume their music and dancing, turning the hotel into a stage for a grand, if chaotic, reconciliation. In the end, the misdirections resolve into a strange, festive calm: Alfred accepts a re-arrest in Eisenstein’s place, a penance that allows the players to preserve face while preserving friendship, and the entire episode leaves a lasting impression of how desire, vanity, and cunning can twist even the most tightly controlled social orders.
