Oh Lucy!

Setsuko is a lonely, middle-aged office worker who meets her niece Mika at a signing event for English classes. Mika persuades Setsuko to buy her out so she can attend a free first class. At the school, Setsuko meets John, who warmly hugs her, gives her the American name Lucy, and outfits her with a bright blonde wig to adopt a new persona.

During the next session, John abruptly quits to return to the United States. Outside the school, Setsuko sees John kissing Mika and getting into a cab. Ayako informs her that Mika has moved to the US, setting the stage for changes in their relationship.

Disillusioned with the new teacher, Setsuko leaves the class and receives a postcard from Mika with an address in Los Angeles. She impulsively decides to follow Mika, with Ayako insisting on accompanying her despite their strained relationship.

In Los Angeles, Setsuko and Ayako find John at home, who claims Mika has left him and he has no idea where she is. They raid his room and discover a postmark from Mika—a motel in San Diego. They rent a car and drive toward the motel to locate Mika.

While waiting for Mika to reappear, John offers to teach Setsuko how to drive, and the two end up having sex. The moment marks a shift in their dynamic and deepens Setsuko's entanglement with John, complicating her feelings.

That same night, Setsuko goes to a tattoo parlor to get the same tattoo as John, hoping for a sign of closeness. When she shows it to him, he rebuffs her advances, signaling a growing emotional distance between them.

The next morning, Ayako confronts John and insists he take her to Mika. John goes to his house where he introduces Ayako to his estranged wife and daughter, who know where Mika is but refuse to tell him, deepening the sense of entanglement and secrecy.

Setsuko and Mika eventually meet; Mika reveals she broke up with John after discovering his family. They share a seaside picnic where Mika playfully teases Setsuko about her crush on John, and Setsuko confesses that she had sex with John.

The two women clash in a physical altercation, culminating in Mika jumping off a cliff in a suicide attempt—though she survives. The event triggers a medical crisis that brings them to the hospital and forces John to confront the fallout of the relationship.

At the hospital, John asks Setsuko whether she told Mika about their affair. Setsuko asserts her love for him, but John rejects her and leaves, signaling the collapse of their fragile connection.

Back in Tokyo, Setsuko learns she is being transferred to another department and decides to quit. The news triggers a chorus of reactions from coworkers, highlighting the emotional and professional destabilization she faces.

Distraught over losing John, her job, and her family, Setsuko attempts suicide by overdosing on pills at home. Takeshi finds her, makes her vomit the pills, and—despite her later seduction attempt—rebuffs her, then reveals his own pain: his son killed himself and he blames himself for being too strict. He asks for a hug, and Setsuko accepts, seeking comfort in a fragile human connection.
