While visiting the Kolkata Book Fair, Gagan notices Sabitri, a monkey-showwoman with a tribal accent, and records the distinctive words she uses. He realises she is keen to learn the language and improve her speech. This encounter seeds his belief that accent can be a gateway to social ascent.

Gagan approaches Sabitri to offer tutoring in language, but she does not believe in his abilities or his plan. She turns him down, showing caution about trusting his methods. The moment highlights Sabitri’s independence and skepticism toward the professor.

Sabitri's uncle, accompanied by a drunken man, breaches her room, forcing her to come out. Disoriented, she roams the streets and, by chance, encounters Abalakanta. She follows Abalakanta toward the possibility of lessons the next morning.
