Will and Dawn leave their Vancouver home in search of a job for Will, hoping to escape mounting debt. The drive is long and tense as their finances verge on foreclosure. They push toward a distant town with little savings and mounting stress.

They reach the distant town but Will's job interview ends without success, fueling frustration and fear about their finances. The couple begins the long drive home under a growing sense of desperation. The return trip is quiet, heavy with unspoken worry.

Two siblings, Lee and Cheryl, join the car as night falls. Lee is friendly enough, while Cheryl remains hostile and evasive, hinting at a shady past. The four try to project a normal front, even as tensions simmer.

A severely hypothermic man staggers into the road; Will brakes hard and the man dies en route to an ambulance. Lee pockets the dead man's cash and discovers his ID, Cormac Leith, complicating the group’s moral math. Cheryl finds a note in his pocket with a set of geographical coordinates.

The four travelers are questioned by police and deny knowledge of the dead man. They feign ignorance to the lack of personal effects. With black ice blocking the highway, they hole up in a motel to wait out the night.

Cheryl looks up Cormac Leith and learns he was recently released from prison and associated with a bank robbery that yielded gold coins. The group realizes the coordinates likely point to the loot's location. A fresh glimmer of hope emerges against their grim reality.

The foursome agrees to pursue the rumored gold despite risks, viewing it as a possible escape from debt. They decide to drive to the road nearest the coordinates and begin a long hike. The plan hinges on luck and endurance against the cold.

They set off toward the coordinates but are quickly drained by inadequate clothing, rough terrain, and suspicion among them. An ominous encounter with a hostile stranger tests their resolve as temperatures plummet. They spend a night improvising shelter, knowing survival hangs by a thread.

Will recognises he is succumbing to frostbite and decides to retreat toward relative shelter. Dawn and Cheryl press on with Lee, and the trio eventually reaches a site where the coins are hidden. The dream of escape starts feeling increasingly hollow as conditions worsen.

Dawn and Cheryl catch up with Lee at the site and fill their clothes with the heavy gold coins. The load weighs them down and heightens the danger of their trek back. Dawn's focus shifts from escape to survival as the group fights exhaustion.

Dawn fights with Cheryl over the treasure and then tries to navigate back to the highway alone. Cheryl and Lee slow Dawn, dragging a heavy chest that taxes their strength. The group fractures under pressure as winter closes in.

Will returns to a cabin shelter and discovers that Cheryl murdered the trapper who lived there. He seizes the trapper's gun and snowmobile, determined to reach Dawn and save her. The desperate rescue attempt begins under a pale, starless sky.

Lee pursues Dawn across a frozen lake while Will closes in from the cliff edge. Dawn uses a flare to signal for help while Lee attacks. Dawn knocks Lee dead, and Will's shot misses, leaving them separated by distance and fate.

Will is rescued and wakes in hospital with severe frostbite, learning Dawn is dead. A police officer hints that gold was found with the bodies, and that more may lie out there, forcing a new pursuit. Cormac Leith is cremated as a John Doe, igniting the urge to retrieve the fortune.
