The condition hangs on Apu's ability to improve, which she resents, clinging to the idea that her fate is to work as a maid. The plan introduces the possibility of outside help into Apu's academic life.

Chanda, a high-school dropout and Apu's mother, enrolls in Apu's class to learn math and ends up tutoring her daughter. Her intrusion into Apu's privacy strains their relationship, and Apu often ridicules her mother. Yet Chanda's involvement begins to open new doors for both of them.

Years later, Apu stands before the UPSC for the Civil Services Examination interview, having passed her early exams.
