Benjamin Franklin Gates, the youngest in a family of treasure hunters, feels the pressure of his family's legacy. His father, Patrick, tries to discourage him from pursuing the family's long history of searching for hidden treasures after being ridiculed for years.

In 1974, Benjamin's grandfather, John Adams Gates, gives him a crucial clue by whispering, 'The secret lies with Charlotte.' This remark becomes the catalyst for Benjamin's lifelong quest for a legendary national treasure linked to the Founding Fathers.

In the present day, Benjamin teams up with his friend Riley Poole to pursue the treasure. Their adventure begins with funding from the enigmatic Ian Howe, setting them on a path filled with danger and intrigue.

The pair discovers a colonial ship named the Charlotte encased in Arctic ice. Their exploration reveals a meerschaum pipe with a riddle from the Knights Templar, hinting at an invisible map connected to a historical artifact.

Ian reveals his ruthless plan for the treasure, which includes stealing the Declaration of Independence itself. This confrontation leads to a chaotic battle, culminating in an explosion that propels Benjamin and Riley into a desperate escape.

Upon returning to the United States, Benjamin and Riley attempt to warn the authorities about Ian's intentions. Their attempts to convince the FBI and Dr. Abigail Chase are met with disbelief, as the idea seems implausible.

Determined to recover the Declaration first, Benjamin, Riley, and Abigail hatch a daring plan to steal it during a prominent gala. The heist unfolds amidst tension as Abigail becomes suspicious of Benjamin’s motives.

After the theft, authorities trace the events back to Benjamin, leading them to his father's house. There, they encounter surprising revelations regarding the cipher and its connections to Benjamin Franklin's writings.

With Abigail's help, Benjamin deciphers a cipher found on the Declaration, linking it to the Silence Dogood letters, hinting at their next destination—the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.

As the stakes rise, Ian pursues Ben under the guise of a prisoner exchange. This leads them deep beneath Trinity Church in New York City, unveiling hidden passageways and secrets buried for centuries.

Ben crafts a ruse to mislead Ian into believing the treasure is located at the Old North Church in Boston. Meanwhile, Ben and Riley secretly implement a plan to escape from their dire predicament.

In a moment of clarity, Patrick, Benjamin's father, reconciles with his son's aspirations during their journey. He admits to now believing in the treasure, symbolizing a significant moment of acceptance.

After an intense journey, Benjamin and his team finally discover the hidden treasure trove they've pursued for so long. A passage leading back to the surface signifies the culmination of their adventure.

Upon returning to the church, Benjamin seeks help from Agent Sadusky, who reveals his ties to the Freemasons. Ben strikes a deal, agreeing to return the Declaration in exchange for Ian's capture.

With Ian apprehended by the FBI, Benjamin chooses to accept only 1% of the treasure as a finder’s fee. As the movie concludes, he begins a romantic relationship with Abigail while Riley indulges in a new Ferrari.
