Toine, a hunchback who works at the tile plant, spends the summer helping farmer Micoulin to be near Micoulin’s daughter Nais. Frederic Rostaing, the landowner’s son on a law‑school break, arrives quietly with the hidden aim of seducing Nais, his childhood acquaintance. A tense power struggle erupts among the father, the naive girl, the predatory student and the poor cripple.
