After dating the attractive Dr. Ben, and prompted by Cassie, the mysterious woman travels to a small town to trace her birth mother through Victor Short, the diner‑running adopted son of the physician who oversaw numerous adoptions. She discovers her mother and her husband, Mark McPhillips, are murder suspects. Back home, an undercover secret agent arrives, forcing the retired operative Philby to provide unconventional assistance.
