The students of Canterlot High set out on a field trip to Camp Everfree, a nature retreat run by Gloriosa Daisy [Enid-Raye Adams] and her brother Timber Spruce [Brian Doe]. On the bus, transfer student Twilight Sparkle [Tara Strong] experiences a nightmare of Midnight Sparkle, a malevolent alter ego born when Equestrian magic runs wild. Her friend Sunset Shimmer [Rebecca Shoichet] offers support, recalling her own past transformation into a demon.
Upon arrival, Twilight discovers telekinetic powers, fueling worry that Midnight’s presence is lingering.
That night, Timber shares a campfire story about a forest spirit named Gaea Everfree who was angered by the camp’s construction and threatens natural disasters. The next day, a sailboat crashes into a dock the campers are building for a fashion show runway. The glittering gem dust that falls from the air matches the prophecy of Gaea’s presence, convincing the campers that the forest spirit is real. Twilight, however, believes her own magic caused the accident and distances herself from friends.
Later, Twilight’s friends begin developing powers that only work within Camp Everfree’s boundaries: Rainbow Dash [Ashleigh Ball] gains super speed; Fluttershy [Andrea Libman] can communicate with animals; Pinkie Pie [Shannon Chan-Kent] can create explosions using sprinkles; Rarity [Tabitha St. Germain] can conjure diamonds out of thin air; and Applejack [Ashleigh Ball] gains super strength. Believing her magic is hurting them, Twilight contemplates leaving the camp. Sunset follows her into the woods and, by sensing her telepathic empathy, convinces her to stay. As Timber leads them back, Sunset notices gem dust falling from his pocket and suspects him of staging Gaea’s attacks. She overhears him arguing with Gloriosa about abandoning the camp, and, remembering his earlier longing for urban life, concludes that Timber means to shut the camp down by scaring the campers.
Sunset and Twilight, with Spike [Cathy Weseluck], explore a nearby cave that has been kept off-limits. There, they find geodes infused with Equestrian magic. They confront Gloriosa, who reveals herself as the true source of the disasters. Sunset, through visions, learns that Gloriosa has been wearing the geodes as a necklace to harness their power in a desperate bid to keep the camp open; Timber, anticipating this, invented the Gaea Everfree story to cover for her.
Gloriosa’s control over the geodes grows more unstable, and she fully embraces her powers, taking on an appearance that resembles Gaea. She crashes the fashion show rehearsal and declares she will “protect” the campers by trapping the camp in a bramble cage. When Twilight and her friends struggle to stop her, they urge Twilight to embrace her magic fully. After a final clash with Midnight Sparkle, Twilight regains control, dismantles the geode necklace, and frees Gloriosa from its influence. The geodes transform into pendants for Twilight and her friends, granting them new magical forms and restoring the camp.
Facing the prospect of closure, the girls stage a last-minute fundraiser ball inside the cave. Their plan draws a large crowd of former campers and, through their renewed bonds and magical abilities, saves Camp Everfree from shutting down.
