My Dinner with Jimi

The story centers on the Turtles in the days leading up to and following the success of their breakout single, “Happy Together,” a moment that catapults them into the national spotlight and opens doors to a world of new opportunities and pressures. Howard Kaylan [Justin Henry] and Mark Volman [Chris Soldevilla] receive their draft notices, a looming shadow over a band riding high on the edge of fame. At a crucial turn, they seek counsel from Frank Zappa [Adam Tomei], Zappa’s quick-witted manager and Kaylan’s cousin, who tells them to consult Herb Cohen [Curtis Armstrong] for a plan to dodge the draft. Cohen’s hard-nosed, controversial advice sets the stage for a reckless, sleepless night: show up to the draft board intoxicated, skip baths and sleep, and act so obnoxious that the Army will reject them outright. Under this high-stakes pressure, Kaylan and Volman plunge into a drug-fueled night, chasing escape and instinct, while the clock ticks toward a fateful review.

When the smoke clears, the pair manage to avoid the draft, and their path takes them overseas to England, where the mood shifts from danger to discovery. Graham Nash [Chris Soldevilla] and Donovan [Rob Benedict] roll out an advance reel of the unreleased Beatles album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a work they hail as the greatest ever heard. The moment feels almost otherworldly to the young Turtles, who are startled and exhilarated as they listen to a sound they’ve idolized from afar. The mood turns tense at a nearby pub, where a meeting with the Beatles goes sour in a flash: John Lennon [Bret Roberts] verbally belittles Jim Tucker [Sean Maysonet], shaking Tucker’s confidence and leaving a bitter memory that shadows the rest of the night. Kaylan, meanwhile, lingers and is introduced to Jimi Hendrix [Royale Watkins] by Brian Jones [Jay Michael Ferguson], the founder of the Rolling Stones. What follows is a vivid, alcohol-fueled evening of conversation and connection, as Kaylan and Hendrix share stories, smoke, and drinks, until the night ends with Kaylan embarrassingly vomiting on Hendrix’s suit—a tangible, messy reminder of the fragility and unpredictability of fame, and the heavy price of glamour.

In the aftermath, the pair returns to the music world with new, almost paradoxical clarity. Kaylan purchases copies of the two transformative records they encountered—Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s and the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s debut, Are You Experienced?—as if stockpiling inspiration to fuel their own work. The strain of the experience takes its toll on Jim Tucker, who decides to quit the Turtles and step away from the music industry, his heart still attached to the Beatles’ legacy even as his career falters. The narrative closes with a quiet, poignant postscript: Tucker remains a lifelong fan of the music that inspired him, even as the road ahead appears uncertain. The story, at once celebratory and sobering, captures a pivotal moment when the pressures of fame collided with the raw, rebellious energy of youth, and the lasting impact of that collision on every member of the band.
