My Dead Friend Zoe

In 2016, in the rugged terrain of Afghanistan, two army mechanics, Merit Charles and Zoe Ramirez, find themselves in a van, listening to Rihanna’s catchy tune “Umbrella” blaring from Zoe’s malfunctioning iPod. Their moment of music is soon interrupted by SPC Lewis ([Rich Paul]), but both women firmly tell him to back off. Fast forward to the present day, where Merit is now attending a court-ordered support group for veterans, accompanied by a ghostly presence of Zoe, who appears only to Merit. As the session progresses, Zoe rises, seemingly to address the group’s purpose, but Merit is jolted back to the cold reality by Dr. Cole ([Morgan Freeman]), the group’s director.

Living alone, Merit is haunted by her vivid hallucination of Zoe, who occupies a space in her home as if they were roommates. Amid this struggle, Merit receives a troubling call from her mother, Kris ([Gloria Reuben]), who informs her that her aging grandfather, Dale ([Ed Harris]), a former Lieutenant Colonel, has gone missing. Concerned, Merit goes in search of him. Upon locating Dale, she learns that he is suffering from early Alzheimer’s, prompting her to stay with him while Kris makes plans for his transition to a retirement home.

During the support group sessions, Merit is hesitant to confide about the troubling incident involving Zoe, feeling triggered by the mere thought of discussing it. Dr. Cole is unable to approve her paperwork due to her emotional scars. It soon becomes evident that Merit is under court supervision because she caused a serious workplace incident that could lead her to jail if she doesn’t successfully complete the program.

One day while jogging through a cemetery, Merit encounters Alex ([Utkarsh Ambudkar]), who is diligently maintaining the gravesites of his late grandparents. Although Merit is initially upset, Alex shares his intentions to honor their memory. Flashbacks unveil discussions between Merit and Zoe about their futures after military service. While Zoe considers re-enlisting, believing she has no place in civilian life, Merit reassures her that there is hope beyond the military.

As the story unfolds, Merit explores potential accommodations at Shady Acres, the retirement home that Kris is considering for Dale. Interestingly, she discovers that Alex is the manager there, leading to a friendly invitation to drinks that evening. The chemistry is palpable, but when Alex pries into her military past, Merit is again overtaken by the haunting presence of Zoe, causing her to flee the bar abruptly.

Skipping group meetings becomes a habit as Merit prioritizes time with Dale. In an effort to bond, she takes him out on his boat for the first time since his wife’s passing. They delve into conversations about Merit’s PTSD, with Dale reminiscing about the lack of these struggles faced by veterans in his era. A flashback reveals the turbulent night guard duty in Afghanistan, when Zoe expresses her feelings of hopelessness about civilian life, leading to a near-tragic conflict.

The intensity reaches a boiling point during a Fourth of July event for veterans, when Alex inadvertently reveals his connection to Shady Acres, leaving Dale feeling betrayed and labeling Merit a traitor. As darkness envelops the park, she rushes home only to find her mother, Kris, waiting with news that Dale has returned home. Upset over Merit’s concealment of Dale’s deterioration, Kris insists on following through with the move to the retirement home.

Once more traversing the cemetery, Merit confronts Zoe’s apparition, which propels her into a poignant memory about their time in Afghanistan. The confrontation reveals Merit’s guilt over not supporting Zoe’s desire to re-enlist and how a missed birthday call led to Zoe’s tragic suicide. Determined to do justice to Zoe’s story, Merit resolves to speak out.

Returning to Shady Acres, she halts Kris’s decision to admit Dale and reconciles with Alex. Resolving to help her grandfather through his challenges, Merit convinces Kris and Dale of her plans to move in and assist. With due significance, she drives back to the support group, ready to face her past as she finally begins to share Zoe’s story with the others.

This poignant tale is inspired by real events and is a tribute to director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes’s two friends, veterans who tragically succumbed to suicide. The film concludes with sobering statistics about veteran suicides and a message urging support for numerous organizations that stood determined to aid veterans since these losses are all too common.
