Their trek across windswept plains and crumbling waystations is punctuated by encounters with wandering monks and the distant echo of bandits, hinting at a world that is both rugged and steeped in whispered legend.

The journey takes an unexpected turn when the pair discover an ancient temple whose walls bear a mural that seems to pulse with unseen life. The painted caravan, rendered in delicate brushstrokes, beckons Zhu Xiaolian with a magnetic allure, drawing his gaze into a doorway between reality and imagination. As the colors whirl, the scholar feels himself slipping beyond the stone, into the luminous expanse of the WanHuaLin— the Forest of Ten Thousand Flowers—where the boundaries of art and existence blur.

Inside this enchanted realm, the air shimmers with the glow of countless fairies, each embodying a fragment of beauty and tragedy. The community is overseen by a stern matriarch known only as Auntie, whose iron‑clad edicts forbid any romantic entanglements with men, casting a shadow over the otherwise radiant paradise. Here, Zhu Xiaolian meets Peony, a luminous fairy who guides him deeper into the forest, and Shaoyao, a quieter spirit who offers subtle counsel. The tension between the fairies’ fragile freedom and their austere governance creates a hauntingly poetic backdrop for the scholar’s inner struggle.
