The journey begins with the scholar Zhu Xiaolian and his page, Hou Xia, as they push toward the capital to take the imperial examination. Along the way they collide with a fierce bandit named Meng Longtan, and a heated clash tests their wits and courage before the two travelers finally press on. Their route leads them to an ancient temple where a monk named BuDong speaks with quiet authority, persuading them to reconcile rather than continue fighting. Inside the temple, Zhu Xiaolian uncovers a mural that seems to breathe with life, a caravan of figures painted in motion that draws him closer with an almost magnetic pull.
As he stares, the mural’s illusion folds inward and Zhu Xiaolian is drawn into a dazzling fairyland called the WanHuaLin, also known as the Forest of Ten Thousand Flowers. A luminous fairy named Peony emerges from the painting and ushers him into this otherworldly space. In WanHuaLin, men are nearly nonexistent; the realm is populated entirely by beautiful fairies who live under the iron rule of a stern leader, known as Auntie. These fairies possess remarkable talents, yet their paradise is shadowed by oppression and control. Auntie forbids any romantic feelings toward men and treats any man who steps into the fairyland without explicit permission as a trespasser to be dealt with harshly.
Within this peculiar paradise, Zhu Xiaolian encounters the fairy Shaoyao, the successor who quietly guides him through the dangers of this domain and helps him slip past Auntie’s watchful eyes long enough to return to the human world. Yet trouble follows—the fairy Peony is captured by Auntie for having brought a man into the fairyland and for defying the strict rules she enforces.
Back in the human world, Zhu Xiaolian learns from his page that the mural depicts more than mere fantasy; it is a warning, a depiction of hell itself. Spirit and sense of duty spur him to act. He resolves to return to the world of the Painting Wall, and with the aid of the monk BuDong, he, Hou Xia, and Meng Longtan venture once more into WanHuaLin. To their surprise, Auntie appears to welcome their presence, proposing a stark bargain: she invites them to choose wives from among the fairies to sustain the lineage of the Forest of Ten Thousand Flowers. To avoid suspicion, Zhu Xiaolian pretends to select Cui Zhu as his wife, while Hou Xia and Meng Longtan also pick their partners, though none realizes Auntie’s hidden plan—to use and then kill them.
As the plot thickens, word arrives that Peony is being held by Auntie, and Zhu Xiaolian seeks the aid of Shaoyao to mount a rescue. What follows is a cascade of magical adventures, tests of loyalty, and cunning schemes, all set against a landscape where heaven and hell brush shoulders and where the boundaries between art, dream, and danger blur. The trio’s journey through this enchanted world becomes a crucible that will test not only their survival but also their deepest convictions, as they strive to save Peony and unravel Auntie’s web of power before more lives are drawn into the perilous game that hangs over the Forest of Ten Thousand Flowers.
