The film opens with Howard Marks, a 65-year-old man, commanding the attention of a lively theater audience. He engages the crowd with a humorous question about cannabis, earning a raucous cheer from the attendees, setting the tone for his reflection on life.

Howard Marks is born in the Welsh valleys in 1945, where he quickly shows extraordinary academic talent. His exceptional performance leads to a scholarship at Oxford University at the age of nineteen, where he studies philosophy and physics.

While studying alone in his dorm room, Howard meets Ilze Kadegis, a vibrant foreign exchange student from Latvia. Their unexpected connection ignites a series of events that drastically change the trajectory of Marks's life.

Following Kadegis into a hidden storage area, Howard is introduced to marijuana by the notorious dealer Graham Plinson. This marks the beginning of Howard's hedonistic journey, leading him to neglect his academic responsibilities.

As their drug use escalates, Plinson introduces the group to LSD, dramatically altering their lives. The tragic overdose of close friend Joshua Macmillan serves as a harsh wake-up call for Marks about the dangers of substance abuse.

In response to the overdose, Marks and his friends make a solemn vow to reform and focus on their studies. Their resolution leads them to frantic last-minute studying, laced with academic dishonesty as they scramble to keep up.

In 1967, Marks, Kadegis, and Plinson enroll in teacher training courses at the University of London. In the midst of their chaotic lives, Marks hastily marries Kadegis, only to quickly realize the cracks in their relationship.

Almost immediately after their marriage, Marks becomes consumed with paranoia about Kadegis's fidelity. His rebellious behavior at the university, characterized by an extravagant hairstyle and flamboyant attire, also draws trouble.

Desperate to aid Plinson's struggling hashish smuggling operation, Marks seizes a risky opportunity to drive a vehicle loaded with drugs to Germany. He cleverly navigates customs by exploiting his anonymity, reveling in the thrill of outsmarting the authorities.

After successfully unloading the drugs in London, Marks quickly amasses wealth by selling his haul to Saleem Malik, an Arab oil sheik. This newfound affluence further entangles him in the perilous world of high-stakes cannabis trafficking.

As Marks's criminal empire grows, he finds himself in increasing conflict with both government agencies and terrorist factions. The high-stakes nature of his activities ultimately leads to his arrest and imprisonment in 1988.

Fast forward to the present, Marks reinvents himself as a charismatic media figure and cult hero. His infamous background adds an intriguing layer to his public persona, captivating audiences with tales of resilience.
