Willy Krueger, an aging widower, shares a basement flat with his cat George and works as the building’s custodian. On Christmas Eve he buys a tree, daydreaming he’s a dapper gentleman while looking at a tailor’s window, then falls asleep to a Mormon Tabernacle Choir record and dreams of conducting the choir. He wakes to carolers, who leave after one song; while decorating he adds a child’s mittens and the nativity figures, feeling for the first time as if he’s in the manger.
