Ellen McHugh, a poor Irish immigrant, gets a job with a carnival to fund her son Brian’s education at a good school. When the school learns of her lowly status, Brian is expelled, and Ellen agrees to let the principal and his wife adopt him. As a widow she becomes their housekeeper, raising their daughter Edith, who later falls in love with Brian.
