A widow favors her lazy, ugly daughter Pechmarie and forces the beautiful, diligent step‑daughter Goldmarie to do all the chores. Goldmarie spins by a well until her fingers bleed, drops her spindle in the cold water, and jumps in on her step‑mother’s order. She awakens in Frau Holle’s enchanting meadow, where she gladly helps with housework. Overcome with homesickness, she asks to return; Frau Holle rewards her with a shower of gold. Back home, her greedy step‑mother and sister covet the same riches.
