Mon oncle Antoine

Benoît is a teenage boy in a quiet rural Quebec town who spends his days in the town general store, a place run by his Aunt Aunt Cecile(/actor/olivette-thibault) and her husband, Uncle Antoine(/actor/jean-duceppe), who also doubles as the local undertaker. On December 24, the day unfolds with him neatly arranging the holiday display and sharing a light flirtation with Carmen, the young woman who works for the family. The atmosphere is intimate, small-town warm, and filled with the small rituals that bind this close-knit community.

That same day, Madame Jos Poulin’s eldest son, Marcel, dies, and a call goes out to the store requesting Antoine’s presence to handle the body. For the first time, Benoît is invited to accompany him on this quiet, somber errand, a rite of passage into a world of responsibility that feels both weighty and oddly intimate. They load the body into a coffin and begin the journey home, a trip that becomes a pivotal moment in Benoît’s perception of the adults around him.

On the way back, Benoît’s impulse to rush everything forward takes hold; he urges the tired horse to hurry, and the coffin tumbles from the sleigh. In the scramble to salvage the situation, Benoît pleads with Antoine to help lift the coffin back onto the sleigh, but Antoine—who has spent the day drinking and who harbors his own private torment—cannot lend a hand. In a moment of raw candor, Antoine confesses that he despises dealing with the dead and that his life feels hollow, despite his affection for Benoît and Carmen. He admits a long-suppressed dream of owning a hotel in the United States and reveals a loneliness born of unmet expectations and the absence of children.

Fuelled by anger and confusion, Benoît manages to get Antoine back into the sleigh and returns to the Poulin home seeking help from his aunt. There, a shattering revelation awaits: his aunt is found embracing Fernand, the household helper, in a moment that fractures the boy’s sense of security and family harmony. The adults’ hidden tensions now unfold in his presence, and the boy is propelled into a new, unsettled awareness of the adults’ imperfect lives.

With the emotional ground unsettled, Benoît accompanies Fernand as they search for the missing coffin, a journey that leaves him haunted and uncertain about what truly happened to Marcel. The boy’s memories become blurred and unreliable in the wake of betrayal and exposure, and he struggles to recall exactly where the coffin fell away.

The search culminates in a stark, communal vigil. The Poulin family gathers around Marcel’s coffin in mourning, the room thick with grief and unspoken questions. Jos, the father who had been away working, returns home, his gaze resting on Benoît with a weight that suggests both protection and distance. The film closes on this lingering, ambiguous moment: a quiet acknowledgement of mortality, family ties, and the fragile line between innocence and the complexities of adult life.
