Three young men come together in a quest to break free from the turbulent dynamics of their families in their Rust Belt hometown. As they confront the challenges of adulthood, unexpected truths put their decade-long friendship to the test.

For over a decade, Bing Liu has compiled a vast collection of footage from his hometown of Rockford, IL, to create MINDING THE GAP. This poignant documentary explores the connection between the challenging upbringings of his skateboarding friends and the intricate nature of contemporary masculinity. Throughout the journey of the film, viewers witness the unraveling of Zack Mulligan’s turbulent relationship with his girlfriend as they navigate parenthood after the birth of their son. Simultaneously, Kiere Johnson grapples with his racial identity and the weight of new responsibilities following the loss of his father.

As Bing Liu maneuvers through the delicate interplay of his camera, his friendships, and his own history, he ultimately crafts a narrative that delves into themes of generational forgiveness while examining the fragile transition from childhood to adulthood.

The film has garnered critical acclaim, winning the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Filmmaking at the prestigious 2018 Sundance Film Festival. It is produced by Bing Liu and Diane Quon through Kartemquin Films, with editing contributions from Liu and Joshua Altman. The project also boasts a roster of executive producers, including Steve James, Gordon Quinn, Betsy Steinberg, Sally Jo Fifer, Justine Nagan, and Chris White.

MINDING THE GAP stands as a co-production of Kartemquin Films, American Documentary / POV, and the Independent Television Service (ITVS), with backing from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program. The film is set to be released by Hulu and Magnolia Pictures on August 17, 2018.
