The story commences in the picturesque setting of an ancient Greek ruin in Taormina, Sicily. A chorus of voices sets the stage for the unfolding narrative, hinting at the complexities of love and identity.

Lenny Weinrib, a dedicated sportswriter from Manhattan, shares his life with Amanda, a passionate art curator. Their seemingly ideal life takes an unexpected turn when they adopt a baby boy named Max.

As Lenny immerses himself in parenthood, he becomes intrigued by the identity of Max's biological mother. Driven by curiosity, he embarks on a quest to uncover her identity, which sets off a chain of events.

After an intense search, Lenny discovers that Max's mother is Linda Ash, a former prostitute who has rebranded herself as Leslie. However, she prefers to be called Linda, which translates to 'pretty' in Spanish.

Eager to help, Lenny arranges a meeting with Linda in her apartment. Instead of a romantic encounter, Lenny suggests she abandon her troubled past, but Linda reacts with anger and firmly declines his proposition.

Undeterred by Linda's rejection, Lenny's resolve to assist her strengthens. He takes on the challenge of liberating her from her abusive pimp and seeks to introduce her to Kevin, a promising boxer.
