The narrative begins against the backdrop of an ancient Greek ruin in Taormina, Sicily, where a chorus of voices introduces the unfolding story of Lenny Weinrib (played by Woody Allen). Lenny, a devoted Manhattan sportswriter, shares his life with Amanda, his ambitious art curator wife. After an intense search, Lenny learns that Max’s mother is Linda Ash, a woman who used to be a prostitute and part-time adult entertainer, now rebranded as Leslie, although she prefers the name Linda, which translates to "pretty" in Spanish. Eager to assist, Lenny arranges to meet Linda in her apartment. However, instead of seeking a romantic liaison, he proposes that she abandon her troubled way of life.
