The Meg

The climax of The Meg sees Jonas Taylor bravely confronting the massive prehistoric shark, a megalodon, which has caused chaos along a beach town. Using his quick thinking, Jonas slices the beast with wreckage from a sunken submarine and then delivers a decisive stab to its eye, effectively blinding it and ending its rampage. After the attack, the injured Meg attracts a swarm of regular sharks, which feed on its wounded body. Jonas then swims to safety, and the surviving crew members celebrate their victory. However, the film hints that another, even larger Megalodon may still be alive, as a second, more enormous shark is shown emerging from the depths after the first is killed, suggesting the danger isn’t entirely over.

Throughout the story, it’s revealed that there are actually two Megalodons. During an attempt to trap and kill the creature, the team discovers the existence of a second, bigger Meg, which kills one of their own and feeds on the first Meg’s carcass. This twist emphasizes that the threat persists beyond their immediate victory. The ending leaves viewers with a sense of unresolved tension, as it implies that more dangers lurking beneath the waves could surface again in future adventures.

In terms of relationships, Jonas and Suyin develop a romantic connection over the course of their perilous mission. Their bond is solidified after saving each other from the Meg’s attacks, and they grow closer as they face the danger together. The film ends suggesting they might pursue a future as a couple, with Jonas also forming a close relationship with Suyin’s daughter, Meiying. Sadly, Suyin’s character does not appear in the sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, as she dies prior to the events of that film. Jonas, now more of a hero, continues to protect Meiying, who becomes his daughter figure, while facing the new, larger threats that emerge from the depths of the ocean.

The ending of The Meg was met with mixed reactions. While some fans enjoyed its over-the-top action and fun monster moments, critics often dismissed it as somewhat artificial and lacking depth. Overall, the film wraps up with a victorious but slightly ominous note, leaving open the possibility of further encounters with these ancient, terrifying predators beneath the surface.
