In the North Atlantic off Greenland, a colossal deep-sea oil rig named Colossus rises from the depths, a monumental achievement for Nexecon Petroleum. This new rig can drill deeper and extract more oil than any other, but its sheer size sits atop delicate fault lines, prompting geologists to warn that deep drilling could disturb the seafloor and unleash catastrophic consequences.
Onboard, a reporter, Christen Giddings, is invited by the company’s CEO, Peter Brazier, to document the project, accompanied by the trusted cameraman, Jake Thompson. The crew remains confident that nothing will go wrong and is skeptical of the geologists’ concerns.
Brazier hopes a documented report will prove Colossus’s safety and show that the region is stable enough for drilling. As operations begin, a rich oil deposit is found, and drilling continues despite warnings. Then the ocean floor fault line ruptures, opening a portal to a mirror ocean that has slept for millions of years and houses prehistoric life. An explosion occurs and the drilling system collapses. A team of engineers descends through a glass elevator to assess the damage.
They encounter a giant predator approaching—the Otodus megalodon, a colossal, 60-foot (18 m) prehistoric shark—the most powerful and fearsome ocean predator to have existed. A struggle for survival ensues as the crew fights to escape Colossus. In a desperate move, Ross Elliot lures the creature to an open space with his small submarine and overloads the fuel tanks, triggering a massive explosion that destroys both the shark and the machinery.
The danger isn’t over, as a second megalodon slips into open waters, passing beneath a boat with Christen Giddings on board, unaware of the lurking threat beneath.
