Adapted from Nikolai Gogol’s tale “May Night, or the Drowned Maiden,” the story follows the headstrong son of a rigid mayor who wishes to wed a modest peasant girl, but his father refuses consent. In desperation he turns to a mysterious, malevolent force that unexpectedly offers aid, setting the stage for comic and supernatural twists.
